Ten Things I Learned From Self Isolation

  1. There are two types of people: those who clean the lint filter when they are done using the dryer, and everyone else who lives in my house.

2. You can have 95% compatibility with another person, and that remaining 5% will still spook you. The other night, my gentleman cohabitant and I were on the couch, scrolling for a movie to watch. We are both still working full time in jobs deemed ‘essential’ by our state’s governor, so it’s just as rare as it ever was for us to watch a movie. I need you to understand this so that you know: we are not in a binge-watching situation in which standards might, understandably, have slipped a bit. Nope. This would be the first movie we’d watched in probably a month. Clicking through Netflix, he paused on one. “Hey!” he said, “Back to School!”

Back to School?, I said, not with my words but with my facial expression. With Rodney Dangerfield?! “No thanks,” I said aloud, trying to keep my tone neutral. And then he, apparently in all seriousness, suggested a Pauly Shore movie.

3. It absolutely helps ease the stir-craziness, the stress build up, and the anxiety of not knowing when this will all end, to listen to some music you love. The other night, at the end of a long and stressful workday, I was in the kitchen making dinner, feeling stuck in what a yoga teacher of mine refers to as the grey…
